Claiming HRA without proper receipts? Here's what you should know.
What is HRA (House Rent Allowance)?
HRA is a component of your salary meant to cover rent expenses. If you live in rented accommodation, you can claim partial or full HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act to reduce your taxable income. The exemption amount depends on your salary, rent paid, and city of residence.
When do I need rent receipts?
Your employer will ask for rent receipts during tax proof submission (typically January–February). Receipts are mandatory when your HRA claim exceeds Rs 3,000 per month. Even if your employer doesn't ask, keep them — the Income Tax Department can request them during assessment.
What should a rent receipt include?
A valid rent receipt should include: tenant name, landlord name and full address, property address, rent amount (in numbers and words), payment date and mode, period covered, landlord's signature, and a revenue stamp (Re 1) if rent is paid in cash and exceeds Rs 5,000/month. From April 2026, Form 124 also requires disclosing your relationship with the landlord.
Is landlord's PAN required on rent receipts?
If your total annual rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000, you must provide the landlord's PAN to your employer. This is a TDS compliance requirement under Section 194-IB. If the landlord doesn't have PAN, a declaration to that effect is needed.
Can I generate receipts for previous months?
Yes. This tool lets you select any start month and year and generate up to 12 months of receipts at once. Useful for generating the entire financial year's receipts during tax season.
What if I don't have a rent agreement?
Rent receipts alone may not be enough. Under the 2026 Model Tenancy Act, all rental agreements must be digitally stamped and registered. Without a written agreement, you have no legal protection in disputes. Generate a state-specific rent agreement with RentDraft for just Rs 99.
